چکیده

Early-life exposure to mild stressors can assist animals in coping with more stressful events later life. This study was aimed at investigating how early stress and dietary lipid contents affect growth, hematology, blood biochemistry, immunological responses, antioxidant system, liver enzymes, responses of oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) ( 6.8 ± 0.7 g). Six experimental treatments were HL0Stress (high-lipid diet without stress), HL2Stresses two-week HL4Stresses four-week LL0Stress (low-lipid LL2Stresses LL4Stresses stress). During the ten-week trial, fish fed high-lipid diets grew faster id="M2"> 46.41 4.67 vs. id="M3"> 38.81 2.81 ) had a lower feed conversion ratio (2.21 2.60) than those low-lipid id="M4"> P < 0.05 ). After acute confinement (AC groups higher survival (81.25% vs 72.92%) id="M5"> Fish subjected two-time (2Stresses) rate after AC (90.63% 62.50%), hematocrit, white cell, performance, total protein, high-density lipoproteins, cholesterol, triglyceride, alternative complement activity (ACH50), superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, alkaline phosphatase levels not stressed id="M6"> Contrariwise, glucose, cortisol, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase significantly 2Stresses compared 0Stress id="M7"> Collectively, these findings suggest stressing signs adaptation fish. However, number (4Stresses) appears exceed threshold manageable for this species. In conclusion, group outperformed other terms health status, responsiveness. Although welfare must be considered, results that result greater are exposed stress.

The Naturally Occurring Accommodative Response of the Oscar, Astronotus ocellatus, to Visual Stimuli

Observation of the naturally-occurring accommodative response of a highly visual teleost species provides the opportunity to study its stimulus-response accuracy. A video recording system, linked to a computer digitizing program, was used to measure accommodative changes in lens position in the oscar, Astronotus ocellatus, in response to known food stimuli. The largest lens deviations occurred ...

Diagnostic imaging of a renal adenoma in a Red Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus Cuvier, 1829).

This case report describes the radiographic, ultrasonographic and computed tomographic (CT) examination of an abdominal swelling in a Red Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus Cuvier, 1829). While radiography only demonstrated caudoventral compression of the swimbladder, ultrasonography found a huge tumor-like parenchyma in the caudal abdomen. CT studies detected a possible connection between the tumor a...

Achlya infection in an Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) with typical symptoms of saprolegniosis

Saprolegniosis is one of the most frequent diseases in the ornamental fish industry that may cause by Achlya spp. There is no report of fungal infection caused by Achlya spp. in Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) in Iran. An Oscar fish was referred to the Veterinary Hospital, Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, Ahvaz, Iran with saprolegniosis symptoms including los...

Rapid regulation of Na+ fluxes and ammonia excretion in response to acute environmental hypoxia in the Amazonian oscar, Astronotus ocellatus.

The Amazonian oscar is extremely resistant to hypoxia, and tolerance scales with size. Overall, ionoregulatory responses of small ( approximately 15 g) and large oscars ( approximately 200 g) to hypoxia were qualitatively similar, but the latter were more effective. Large oscars exhibited a rapid reduction in unidirectional Na(+) uptake rate at the gills during acute hypoxia (Po(2) approximatel...

Histopathological study of parasitic infestation of skin and gill on Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) and discus (Symphysodon discus)

Histopathology provides a rapid method to detect effects of irritants and pathogens in different organs and it can be considered as the indicator for abnormal condition for fish environment. The present study was initiated to record the histopathological lesions of gill and skin associated with external parasites in two common aquarium fish, Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) and Discus (Symphysodon ...
